OUR COMMUNITIES HOLD THE KNOWLEDGE.
A Meeting of Sacred Waters (translated from Te Huinga Wai Tapu in Māori) is a virtual gathering that provides a space for sharing Indigenous worldviews, values and perspectives to reclaim the health of the world’s rivers. Through the experiences of Indigenous peoples of the Whanganui and Colorado Rivers, this global exchange explores and honors the Indigenous knowledge vital to healing our ancestral waters. The event welcomes all those who envision a sustainable future, including leaders and representatives from Indigenous nations and communities; Non-Governmental Organizations; local, state, regional, national and international governments; universities and research institutions; businesses and social enterprises; students; and others.
KNOWLEDGE IS DEEPENED WHEN LEARNING EXPERIENCES FOSTER CONNECTION, MUTUAL RESPECT AND A SHARED VISION.
Indigenous practices occur locally, but impact globally. By coming together as an international community in support of our rivers, we can begin to create systemic change through law, policy, economics, and management practices that are centered on Indigenous values and perspectives.
A Meeting of Sacred Waters aims to create connections, build relationships and ignite new ideas for healing our ancestral waters. To achieve this, we will:
-Highlight the interconnectedness between our health and the health of our rivers. -Share the learnings that emerged through an Indigenous knowledge exchange. -Explore Indigenous pathways to heal our rivers through sustainable, systemic change. -Plenary sessions, expert panels, group discussions, and roundtables are designed to engage, exchange and explore ideas. Outcomes of the forum will be gathered and compiled into a resource document that will be shared with attendees and made publicly available.
JOIN THE CONVERSATION WITH PEOPLE FROM AROUND THE WORLD.
The forum will have special features, including:
-Global prayer for the health and healing of our rivers -Indigenous speakers and keynote presenters -Pre-screening of the short documentary, From the Mountains to the Sea -Indigenous Leader Panel -Indigenous Roundtable Discussions -Indigenous-led approaches to natural resource stewardship -Virtual exhibit hall -Indigenous arts and crafts vendors
